Explain the task clearly and slowly, facing the client whenever possible. Use a curtain, screen or door to give the client privacy. Before washing, check the water temperature for safety and comfort; ask the client to confirm its comfort. Put on clean gloves before washing. Before washing, place a linen protector beneath the perineal area, including the buttocks. Uncover the area around the catheter, exposing only the area between the hip and knee. Put soap on a wet washcloth. Hold the catheter at the urinary opening without pulling. Clean at least 4 inches outward from the opening, moving only away from it and using a fresh cloth area for each stroke.Critical · source marked Keep holding the catheter at the urinary opening without pulling. Empty the basin, then rinse and dry it. Put the basin in the designated area for dirty supplies. Put used linens in the soiled-linen container and dispose of the linen protector appropriately. Keep used linens from touching your clothing. Remove gloves without contaminating yourself, discard them in the waste container, and wash your hands.
